How It Started

Studio owner Julie opened the Eugene, Oregon StarCycle studio in December 2019.

Julie took her first indoor cycling class at StarCycle Lake Oswego in 2018. “I fell in love with it,” Julie said. “I absolutely loved the class format and the whole Star experience.”

Julie, the Owner of StarCycle Eugene

Before franchising with StarCycle, Julie worked in medical sales and was a part-time physical fitness instructor.

Julie decided to franchise with StarCycle because she wanted to do what the StarCycle studios in the Portland metro area were doing instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Plus, because StarCycle was founded near Portland, many people were already familiar with StarCycle in Eugene.

When Julie opened StarCycle Eugene, she was nervous about the potential risks of starting an indoor cycling studio and wanted to set the bar high. But she was also excited to share the experience she had in Lake Oswego with the Eugene community and add a fun, new option to the fitness centers in the area.

Julie’s advice to future StarCycle franchise and other business owners is that you may not need a business partner, even if you feel like you need one. But if you do form a partnership, make sure your business partner is someone you trust and are equally aligned with.

How It’s Going

Eugene is home to the University of Oregon, so StarCycle Eugene has a particularly community-driven atmosphere.

Still, StarCycle hasn’t been immune from the challenges facing businesses today, especially in the health and fitness industry. Julie and her team have been through a lot since the Eugene studio opened, especially due to the pandemic, which taught them how to “pivot and think outside the box.” Despite these challenges, StarCycle Eugene continues to thrive.

When asked what her favorite thing about StarCycle is, Julie said, “Everything! It fuels my soul.”

Julie’s favorite song for indoor cycling workouts right now is the “Hold Me Closer” remix featuring Elton John and Britney Spears.

When she’s not at StarCycle Eugene, Julie enjoys hiking, running, playing golf, and generally spending time outdoors.

6 Things I’ve Learned From Indoor Cycling

Hi! I’m Abby, an indoor cycling instructor at StarCycle Lake Oswego.

Like many people, I have worked out on and off throughout my entire life. I did ballet, Pilates, kickboxing, weight lifting, running—I tried it all. Some workouts I enjoyed, others not so much.

The routine I landed on was three gym workouts and one yoga class per week, but I had always believed that I would never be that person. I would never “love” working out or feel the cult-like adoration for a particular type of exercise class that some of my friends had.
Enter StarCycle.

My First Real Foray Into Indoor Cycling

One day, I decided to change things up. I downloaded the ClassPass app and signed up for a few different fitness classes in Eugene, Oregon, where I lived at the time. One of those exercise studios was StarCycle Eugene.

To be perfectly honest, I was not super excited about it at first. I had tried other indoor cycling classes, and some of them were okay. But I had seen reality TV shows where people go to a crowded, bougie indoor cycling studio lit up with screens and a boot camp-style instructor yells at them. This was my basic nightmare, but I decided to try it anyway.

The first thing I noticed was that the lobby was sleek and bright and the staff was welcoming and friendly. When I entered the studio, it was dark and candlelit. There were no screens in sight. The instructor made an effort to learn my name.

Then, the music was loud and bumping. The message throughout the class was encouraging and inspiring. I found it to be just the right amount of challenging, and I left the studio dripping in sweat and optimism. I realized I could be that person after all, and I couldn’t wait to go back.

Two and a half years, a global pandemic, and 250 rides later, I became a StarCycle instructor at the StarCycle Lake Oswego studio.

From just after my first ride in February 2020 to post-instructor training in June 2022.

6 Things I’ve Learned from Riding at StarCycle

Here are six things my indoor cycling journey has taught me.

1. Don’t stop until you find your thing.

As I mentioned above, I had tried many different types of workouts before I made it to StarCycle, including other indoor cycling classes. But it took finding the right studio at the right time with the right instructors for me to find my fitness groove.

So if you’re not there yet, keep going. And if you know about StarCycle but haven’t quite hit your stride, here are a few tips:

  • First things first—if you haven’t clipped in for your first ride yet, book your bike now. Your first class is on us!
  • Change up your class schedule. I used to take evening and weekend classes exclusively, then I switched to early morning classes instead (hello, 6 a.m.). It took some time to find a routine that worked for me, but once I did I found I had more energy both on and off the bike.
  • Try riding with a new instructor. Even if you love the instructors you usually ride with, it’s always great to get variety in your rides. StarCycle encourages their instructors to be themselves and bring their unique personality traits to the table, so you’ll find something new and inspiring with each and every person you ride with.
  • Bring a first-time rider with you! Riding with someone you love and seeing them experience the magic of indoor cycling for the first time can be fun and encouraging for both of you. You can book a ride for yourself and your guest at the same time through the StarCycle website or app.

2. Trust the bike and trust yourself.

When I first started indoor cycling, I had a really hard time trusting the equipment and believing in my body’s abilities.

I felt like if I caught the beat with the instructor my feet would fly out of control. I imagined that if I came up and out of the saddle with my hands at position three I would become airborne, like that scene from E.T. I worried that if I closed my eyes during isolation I would lose my balance. I felt like if I fully rested my hips on the handlebars during stretching—well, you get the picture. Anxiety much?

Then one day, I heard an instructor say, “Trust the bike.” I didn’t realize until that point that my fears and difficulty keeping pace stemmed from a lack of trust—not only in the bike, but in myself.

So I trusted. I trusted myself to adjust my resistance knob as needed. I trusted my muscles to stabilize me. I trusted my ability to balance. And I trusted the bike to support me.

When I let go of my fears and assumptions, I was able to keep pace and push myself much further. I carried that lesson with me off the bike, and it gave me a greater sense of self-confidence as a result.

3. You can do hard sh*t.

This is one of my favorite messages I’ve heard from my StarFam. Short, strong, and to the point, it is one of my favorite in-class reminders, and it is something I remind myself of often even when I’m off the bike.

Now, instead of thinking, “This is hard, I need to change something or quit,” I tell myself, “This is hard, and I can do hard sh*t.” Then I keep it moving, and I like myself all the more for it.

4. It’s okay to cry (really).

It’s OKAY to cry, and it ISN’T just you.

When I was just a few rides in, I got very emotional mid-class and began to sob (I’m a crier, okay). At first, I used my towel to wipe away my tears and tried to hide my face. But then I realized that everyone else in the darkened studio was so focused on riding to the beat and following the choreography that no one even noticed that I was getting emotional. So I let it all out and just kept riding.

For a long time, I assumed that I was the only person who had this kind of experience on the bike. Then one day, I heard a StarCycle instructor tell a fellow rider that she called one part of the studio her “crying corner.”

The rider said, “Me too!”

Taken aback, I asked, “Wait, both of you have cried during class, too?”

They both nodded and the StarCycle member said, “Oh, multiple times.”

I explained that I had thought it was just me, and they shook their heads.

“No, girl—we’ve all been there,” the instructor said, and it’s true. We have all been there, maybe not in the middle of a workout class, but we have all. been. there. Somewhere. And it’s okay to go there at StarCycle if you need to. It’s okay to cry!

5. There are many ways to be “fit.”

Like many of us, I have struggled with negative self-talk and obsessed over body image.

When I started indoor cycling, I saw my body change, and not in all the ways I imagined it would. I felt toned, and I felt strong. For the first time in a long time, I began to feel happy with myself and my body. Not just because of the way I looked, but because of the way I felt: fit, content, and proud of all the miles I’d put in.

StarCycle is for everybody and every body—it doesn’t require anything of you other than that you show up. This means showing up physically and showing up for yourself. When you let go of judgments and expectations, you may be surprised to learn how much you can get out of your workout, even beyond the superficial.

6. Community means everything.

During some of the hardest times I’ve had over the past two and a half years, going to StarCycle was the best part of my day. Visiting the studio allowed me to get out of my head, catch up with my favorite instructors, and connect with other riders in my community. It felt like home.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we all became acutely aware of the importance of community and how difficult it is to become disconnected from one another. I was grateful to be able to go for runs around my neighborhood and use the gym in my apartment complex, but nothing compared to synchronized push-ups or taking it out of the saddle in unison during a big beat drop. When the studio near me reopened, the relief in the room was palpable.

If I’m feeling stressed out or just need to see a friendly face, it’s a relief to know I can sign up for an indoor cycling class at StarCycle and walk out feeling better than when I walked in. Community is everything, and there is no replacement for it.

The Moral of My StarCycle Story

Since I began riding at StarCycle, I’ve learned a lot about indoor cycling, but I’ve learned even more about myself.

I’ve learned that not all of the assumptions I’ve made about myself are true. I’ve learned that I can—and do!—love fitness. And I’ve learned that I can have fun even when things get hard. I’m so grateful to StarCycle for teaching me these lessons and helping me find the power within myself to take on new challenges.

Meet Lea, the Owner of StarCycle Chesapeake

Lea Barlett lives in Hampton Roads, Virginia with her husband Tony. She has been teaching health and fitness classes since 2012 and has earned certifications in HIIT, Pilates, Circuit Training, Aqua, PT, and of course, indoor cycling.

Lea first fell in love with indoor cycling because it was a full-body, low-impact workout. Then she fell in love all over again when she visited StarCycle’s indoor cycling studio in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 2021. Lea loved the workout she got at StarCycle, but even more captivating was the feeling she got from being a part of something bigger. To Lea, StarCycle was not like other fitness centers she had been to—it was a lifestyle.

Lea decided it was time to introduce the East Coast to this West Coast company and invite her home state of Virginia to clip in, check out, and ride!

Onsite Childcare

In addition to beat-driven, 45-minute indoor cycling classes, StarCycle Chesapeake will be offering craft-based childcare with skilled caretakers at select times. That way, your little one can stay safe and entertained while you enjoy a sweaty, tech-free workout.

How to Playlist Like an Indoor Cycling Instructor

How to Turn Your Car Into an Indoor Cycling Studio
How to Make Indoor Cycling a Part of Your Personality
How to Playlist Like an Indoor Cycling Instructor[Without Actually Becoming One]

We’re all guilty of carpool karaoke, and if you take any sort of indoor cycling classes, you’re probably also guilty of carpool choreography. Your instructors definitely do this in their car, at the bar, and it’s almost always their go-to dance move at the club. You know exactly what we’re talking about, the “one down, one out” pushups on the steering wheel as soon as that beat drops? The girls that get it, get it – and it’s nothing to be ashamed of when the person next to you at the stoplight starts staring. They probably just wish they were in your passenger seat dropping and pressing in sync with you.

After riding a few times, you may have left class wondering what one of the songs the instructor used in their playlist, and how to find it. It’s a pretty safe bet that most of the wonky, crazy remixes are from SoundCloud, which is one of the top music-streaming services. They offer a monthly subscription, but coming from an instructor, you don’t need to pay the $5/mo – you just have to know how to use it. All you have to do is type in the name of your favorite song and follow it up with “remix.” For example, if you’re a Lady Gaga fan, try typing in “Fun Tonight Lady Gaga remix” and one of the songs that pops up will be this one by OTIOT. Maybe Gaga isn’t your jam, but you really like a good mashup? This “Temperature X Satisfaction” remix with Sean Paul and Benny Benassi is fire. Finding a new remix to a song gives all your old favorites a total refresh, so you too can create a hot playlist just like your instructors! The best part about SoundCloud is almost all of the best remixes are completely free to stream and download.

If SoundCloud isn’t your jam, don’t worry – Spotify and Apple Music can be just as good when it comes to making a flawless playlist that will have all your friends begging you to share it with them. They both cost $9.99/month and will give you access to not only hundreds of thousands of songs, but also podcasts, custom playlists, and radio as well. You can find playlists that have already been made for indoor cycling classes by searching popular keywords, such as “indoor cycling,” “cycling music,” or “spinning workout.” For more recently released songs, include the year 2022 in your search. The first playlist that pops up on Spotify is this 7.5 hour playlist, so you should be able to find at least one song you like! Apple Music is a good source too; here’s a similar playlist to the Spotify one. One of the perks of having Apple Music is you can download SoundCloud songs straight to Apple Music using an online converter, whereas to download them on to Spotify you have to use a 3rd party service. To use the website tool to convert SoundCloud songs to MP3’s and play them through Apple Music, you have to copy and paste the SoundCloud song link into another site such as https://soundcloudmp3.org/, download the MP3, and then it should automatically pop-up and start playing in your Apple Music Library. If you’re a visual learner, here’s a YouTube video that explains how to download your music. YouTube is a great source for finding remixes that sometimes aren’t even on SoundCloud. For example, one of my favorite climb songs EVER is this ‘Milkshake X Losing It’ mashup. If you’re into Tik Tok remixes, or just enjoy the funny clips of Julia Fox interviews, this is one of the best remixes for her iconic “unkuh jahmzz” scene on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast with Alexandra Cooper. You can literally find a club remix to almost anything you see on the internet, even scenes from everyone’s favorite childhood tv show, SpongeBob SquarePants. Remember in the Krusty Krab Pizza episode, when the fish is demanding his Diet Dr. Kelp? Yeah, there’s even a trap remix to that too. You’re welcome.

After you’ve curated your perfect driving playlist, the second most important piece is the ambience of the space. A lot of indoor cycling studios utilize bright LED strip lights to drive your motivation and set the vibe even further, and you can get that same effect in your car for less than $20 on Amazon with this link. These customizable strip lights have several colors, effects, and can even be set to be sensitive to the music you play, so when that beat drops the lights will change accordingly, just like in your cycling classes! Setup is a lot easier than it looks and there are multiple how-to videos so you know exactly what goes where. There is also an app for these lights so that you can control them from your phone when you’re not driving. Don’t get too carried away with all of these while you’re driving, always stay safe on the road!

You’ve got music, lights, and all you have to do is grab your cycling buddy and hit the road. Just like the feeling when everyone in the front row hits the drop in sync, you can just as easily recreate that feeling with your bestie in the front seat. What better way to get hyped for class than to pretend like you’re already in there? With the right playlist and fun lights, you can easily pretend like your car is your favorite indoor cycling studio. We recommend doing this especially when you’re on your way to take class. Whether Apple Music, Spotify, or SoundCloud is your jam, you’ll for sure be able to compile the perfect playlist with our advice, the addition of the lights in your car is just an added bonus. Who knows, maybe you’ll be able to take your playlist curation skills to the next level and become an instructor at your indoor cycling studio!

Working Out As A Mom

Staying active has always been important for both my physical and mental health. Growing up and through my formative years, I played soccer year-round and loved the intense cardio and competitive aspects of the game. In high school and college I also performed in musical theatre and stage productions.  Combining physicality with music felt natural and was just downright enjoyable. So, when I went to my first StarCycle spin class and felt the energy in the room, I knew this was the right place for me.

I went through StarCycle spin instructor training the same time I found out I was pregnant.  Though it was a bit daunting to go through training during my first trimester, I believe the work I put into preparing to be an instructor helped my overall psychical and mental well-being. The excitement, anticipation, anxiety, and physical stresses that I was enduring as a first-time mother-to-be at times felt overwhelming. So, having a place where I could decompress and focus my energy into something that didn’t revolve around work or home life was like therapy.  Moreover, being pregnant during the pandemic would at times feel isolating, so being a part of the Star Cycle community, whether it be instructing or taking a class, helped me to feel more connected.

I taught spin until I was 37 weeks pregnant. I felt strong mentally and physically, and I believe it helped me recover from the birth of my son more smoothly. I had a c-section, and it was a painful recovery. But knowing that I had an outlet to go back to as soon as my body was capable helped me push through.  I pushed myself to get back on the bike slowly and by week 5 post-surgery, I was back to conditioning and preparing myself to teach again.

I dealt with postpartum depression, and I can honestly say that clipping into the bike was the therapy that helped me push through mentally. As a new Mom, it is incredibly difficult and the sleep deprivation was mind bending. There were times I felt broken down. I had a new routine that wasn’t my own. I felt like my life wasn’t my own anymore: my mind, body, energy, everything.   Everything that I had was being poured into this little being that I had given birth to. It was miraculous, overwhelming, and chaotic. I didn’t know when or if these feelings would ever go away or if this was the “new normal.”

Having the StarCycle community motivated me to push through. Just like a spin class when you hit a wall and your legs feel like they can’t pedal anymore, you push through. So as a new mom, I continued to put in the work and knew that if I worked hard at giving my little baby what he needed to grow and thrive, then that connection and bond with him would also grow and thrive. And now my little one is 17 months, and I couldn’t imagine a life without him.

StarCycle is a place that motivates me to be the best version of myself. Having an outlet for yourself, especially being a new mom, is incredibly important. And the entire process of being an instructor: searching for and listening to new music, creating playlists for class, spinning to make my body stronger, and encouraging everyone in the class to push themselves for 45 minutes in a dark room with music blasting, is the most powerful outlet. This outlet helps me stay strong for my family.

The desire to inspire and push others to achieve goals is so rewarding. I believe that making exercise a lifestyle has given me the freedom to share this passion with others. The example is such: no matter what you set your mind to do, no goal is unattainable.

Why I Chose to Franchise with StarCycle

I chose to franchise with StarCycle, even though, to tell you the truth, I could have gone out and opened an indoor cycling studio on my own. Did I want to do that? No. Here’s why…

My story with StarCycle is one with history; you can read more about my journey from client to StarCycle’s corporate director of training here in a previous post. To tell the long story in just a sentence or two, I began riding at StarCycle as a client when I was 16 years old and completely fell in love with the class, the instructors, and the fellow clients. I knew StarCycle needed to have a larger role in my life, so throughout the years to come I worked in childcare, front desk, as an instructor, trainer, and lastly the director of training.

All of a sudden the stars magically aligned for my life long dream to open a StarCycle franchise to come true. It dawned on me for a moment that I could just open an indoor cycling studio on my own, but honestly the moment was fleeting. Even though I have about an 8 year history with StarCycle, there are a handful of reasons that stood out to me as a no-brainer to franchise StarCycle and how it would not only make my life easier, but make my business more successful.

First is technology. There are so many technological aspects of opening a business that a franchise takes care of for you. StarCycle already has an operating website with a developer who quickly added my location page to the website. I didn’t have to create a privacy policy, figure out SEO, pay for website hosting, etc. I didn’t have to find a booking software to use, or set up an email marketing service. I can’t even imagine how much extra time and money this would have taken me. Instead, I am able to be out in my local community making connections for my StarCycle location.

Second is the brand. Every business has to create a well-thought out brand including, fonts, colors, logos, merchandise and more. Not only did I buy-in to a pre-established brand, but it’s a brand I can fully stand behind and absolutely love. StarCycle is all-inclusive, fun, and encouraging. Our mission statement is to, “deliver a kickass experience that inspires every rider to be their best self.”

Next is the buildout. When you franchise with StarCycle you hardly have to make any decisions on the studio buildout, which is SO nice. Again, instead of picking bathroom tiles, you can be spreading the word about your new business.

While there are endless reasons why franchising makes the most sense, the last and best reason is the support. StarCycle has a team of amazing people who I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside with to help support you every step of the way. Whether you’re opening a business with a franchise or on your own, it’s a big deal and takes a lot of hard work. Having a support system to cheer you on and help strategize is priceless.

‘Tis the season… for our annual Christmas giveaway!

StarFam, we first want to thank every single instructor, rider, first-timer, and member of our staff for sticking with us through the thick and thin this past year. While many of our lives changed in unpredictable ways, we fought for StarCycle to remain a safe haven for many to turn to. Whether you needed a sweaty release, a break from technology/news, or just to see a familiar face we hope that we were able to provide you with a comforting environment where you are truly seen, appreciated, and valued.

We saw our classes transition from being virtual, to outdoors, to indoors. We made new friends and expanded what we ever imagined our community could be or look like. And above all, we had one another. To dance with, play with, laugh with, and sometimes yes, even to cry with.

We. Were. There. We showed up. We moved through the joys and challenges of life. And we did it as we always do, together.

This giveaway is for you. For the virtual class badass, for the one who never misses a class. The tap-back kings and queens. The occasional rider. We deeply appreciate every one of you and cannot thank you enough for riding this wave of life with us.

To celebrate YOU, we are giving away these fabulous items all throughout December. Simply follow the instructions on our Instagram posts, and we’ll be announcing the winners in our IG stories. Keep reading to hear more about our top picks and snag them for your loved ones!

Taking Care of Yourself: It’s More Important Now Than Ever

You’ve probably heard it before but we’re here to tell you again. Taking care of yourself and focusing on your health is more important now than ever. Here at StarCycle we believe that putting extra focus into taking care of yourself will lead to a stronger body, a stronger mind, and a stronger heart.

Here are 3 tips and tricks from the team at StarCycle to help take care of yourself:

Set goals for yourself. It doesn’t matter the size of the goal, as long as you’re realistic and think it’s achievable. These can be daily and/or weekly goals. Some ideas may be to drink a certain amount of water, get to bed by a certain time, wake up 10 minutes earlier than normal, or go on a daily walk. Make sure to celebrate each goal! Remember it takes 30 days to form a habit, so stay committed.

Surround yourself with people who build you up. Make a point to see your best friend, your family, or your favorite coworker. Maybe even show up to your cycling class 10 minutes earlier than usual to spend more time enjoying the positive energy you feel from everyone in the studio and lobby. Don’t underestimate the like minded people next to you at an exercise studio like StarCycle and just how much they will build you up.

Move your body. Exercise and movement really don’t need to be that complicated. Walks, runs, yoga, stretching in your room are all great ways to get daily movement in your routine. If you’re like many people who need the group fitness environment, sign up for a StarCycle class. The hardest part is getting in the car and walking through the door. Once you’re there, it always feels worth it. The motto at StarCycle is “Clip In, Check Out, Let’s Ride.” It doesn’t matter how fast your legs spin, just that you showed up to take care of yourself and get 45 minutes to focus on you. Sounds like a good deal to us!
